China’s forest area has reached 231 million hectares.

March 12 marks China’s 45th Arbor Day. According to the “2022 Report on China’s Land Greening Status,” released that day by the Office of the National Greening Committee, China’s forest area currently stands at 231 million hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 24.02%; grassland area totals 265 million hectares, and the comprehensive vegetation cover of grasslands has reached 50.32%.

According to the “2022 Report on China’s Land Greening Situation,” released that day by the Office of the National Greening Committee, China’s forest area currently stands at 231 million hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 24.02%; grassland area totals 265 million hectares, and the comprehensive vegetation cover of grasslands has reached 50.32%.

  According to the bulletin, China’s scientific greening efforts continue to be deepened and advanced. In 2022, the country completed afforestation on 3.83 million hectares, grassland restoration and improvement on 3.214 million hectares, and treatment of desertified and rocky desertified land on 1.8473 million hectares. Additionally, 262 various “Internet Plus Public Obligatory Tree Planting” activities were launched.

  Urban and rural greening and beautification are being advanced in tandem, with the quality of greening steadily improving. Twenty-six cities have been awarded the title of “National Forest City,” bringing the total number of National Forest Cities nationwide to 218. More than 100 cities have launched initiatives to build National Garden Cities, and across the country, 3,520 “pocket parks” have been constructed. Throughout the year, nearly 100,000 kilometers of highway greenbelts were completed, and the greening rate along railway lines reached 87.32%.

  The bulletin also showed that in 2022, significant progress was made in the protection and management of forest and grassland resources, yielding new achievements in enhancing ecological beauty and improving people's livelihoods. The forest chief system has been fully established, with nearly 1.2 million forest chiefs at all levels across the country. Throughout the year, the incidence rate of forest and grassland fires remained persistently at historically low levels. A total of 13.846 million hectares of grassland pests were effectively controlled. The total output value of the forestry and grassland industries reached 8.37 trillion yuan for the year. Additionally, 133,300 hectares of camellia oleifera were newly planted and 266,700 hectares were renovated throughout the year, with annual tea oil production expected to surpass 1 million tons.
